Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one member of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. From this position she started her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. Amy Carlson was raised in Glen Ellyn (Illinois) and was a part of her early years living in Chicago. Amy was a part of her family in Chicago until she was in junior high school.
